Fun day at beach...not so fun after!

We had a great day at the beach. The girls met up with friends and they swam for hours in the ocean. They had lunch and played with little kids and walked along the beach and just had a blast. They day was gorgeous and we even saw the usual dolphins swimming. It is Zuma after all. They show up daily!
Then I went to pull the car around by the showers because I parked a little far because there was no parking by the tower we were meeting others at. I pulled up just in time to see Bethany collapse to the ground! She felt dizzy and passed out for a second! She got up on her own and then staggered over to the car and told me she felt "weird". I got her a cold bottle of water and made her drink it down. I then hosed her down at the cool shower. I thought she had just over heated. She seemed fine after that and on the drive home, she and her friend ate chips and drank their waters and all was good.
So we got to Costco and all of the sudden, down one of the aisles, she told me her legs were feeling weak. She then complained of a horrible headache that seemed to get worse by the minute, so much so that it brought her to tears. We got out of there and I loaded her in the car and she opened the door to throw up. I called her doctor right away but it was after hours. She kept getting sick and I had to get her friend home so her mom could pick her up. I also did NOT want to sit in emergency for 5 hours while she was feeling this way. At this point, I just thought it was heat exhaustion. The on-call pediatrician called me back and told me it probably wasn't heat exhaustion if her temperature is normal (and it was). He told me to be safe, to take her to an urgent care doctor. I got her ready to go and she ran to the bathroom again and begged me to let her sleep. Todd got home and just said to let her sleep. So she slept for an hour or so after I gave her Advil to calm her headache. On a hunch, I checked out the information on a shot she got the day before at her 11 year visit. It was a vaccine for meningitis called Meningococcal. She had ALL the side effects - headache, nausea/vomiting, weakness in arms and legs (especially legs), dizziness, etc. So I think that is what happened. I think she had a reaction to her vaccine. I have a call into her doctor to let her know of what happened. I bet she will concur with us.
She awoke and was really hungry. So I fed her and she got up and played games with Hannah and was fine! She is great today as well. So we all prayed and as always, God blessed the whole situation! Bethany even prayed and that is always great when she gets results. It really strenghthens her faith in HIM! Yeah!

  1. I'm glad Beth is okay! No fun dealing with these kinds of situations, especially with our kids! Glad the girls had fun at the beach anyway!
