We have had a mountian lion problem for the past 7 months in our neighborhood. About 2 years ago, a couple of cubs strayed from their mom and the Fish and Game folks were not able to tag them. They believe one of them has claimed the hills behind us in Santa Rosa Valley. But instead of eating his usual diet of deer, coyotes, oppossums, etc. he has gone after dogs! And he has strayed from the usual cougar pattern by going after big dogs (he gutted several dogs over 70 pounds) and getting them in broad daylight in people's yards, and he has been going to yards where 2 dogs are present. So not happy about that.
What is most frustrating is that Fish and Game has very strict rules on how we are legally allowed to kill this animal. They are under the endangered species list and protected by the government. (Too bad the government doesn't care as much about us!)
So in order for me to kill this lion, I have to get some sort of depradation permit (which I don't even need for a human being who trespasses onto my property!) But even then, I can only get one if the lion has already killed one of my dogs??? And it is only good for 10 days anyway!
So my Lucy girl acted strange about a month ago. She was whining at the door and pacing back and forth, jumping on the sliding door, etc. I scolded her to stop a few times before I finally let her in and she was unusually naughty jumping on me, the couch, the girls, etc. She knows she isn't allowed to do that and although she is a jumper, she was getting better about jumping. I didn't suspect the lion until I saw the sign on our neighbor's yard that his German Shorthaired-Pointer was missing for 3 days. This dog used to roam our street all the time and I would often see him in the hills when I went on my walks. The same hills the lion has taken up residence. The lion has killed about a dozen or more dogs (and some pet goats) and all the dogs exhibited that strange behavior before they were killed. Most the owners didn't know why they acted the way they did until after the fact. The dogs knew there was danger present and the lions usually stalks his prey a day or two in advance. So whether there was a lion nearby and Lucy sensed that or not, she acted way out of character for her. Maybe the lion was scoping them out and decided not to go after them (I hope). Maybe he was waiting to come back later but I had the dogs inside. Either way, creepy that this animal is stalking the neighborhood.
On another note, the coyotes are now getting more aggressive. They are not showing fear of humans. The trackers went through the hills with bloodhound dogs and the coyotes were nipping at them and being really aggressive and weren't even afraid of the humans. That is also unusual for these predators. Bloodhounds are big dogs that coyotes usually don't go after. Maybe because they were in a pack they tried to go after them but strange animal behavior in our neck of the woods. Keep us in prayer that we don't post a memorial for one of our dogs or worse - our kids or someone else's :O( This lion has been quite elusive and has no intention of leaving. So someone has to take him out. Luckily coyotes aren't on the endagered species list (yet).
